The Trouble With Transparency

How many LLCs do you have?

If you write professionally for hire (as opposed to writing fiction), you probably ought to have at least one
for limited liability protection and tax savings (assuming you would otherwise file as an S-Corp.

The Authors Guild has a good article on the topic.

However, when you have an LLC, you have to file an annual report with your State. That's no big deal, although you do have to be accurate and truthful, and you pay a small fee every year. In my State, the fee
is $25.

The trouble is, your filing includes the name of your LLC, the owner, member or agent's name, address, and contact information (email etc), also filing date, also renewal date.... and anyone can look it up.

Scammers are doing so.

If you receive a "reminder" email that appears to be from your State, letting you know that your annual report filing is due, do not click the link. Scammers are trying to trick you into paying $125 or more for a filing that ought to cost $25.

For more information, use a search term such as "llc renewal scam".

All the best,
