How many "dark sides" can a cloud have? How many sides? Only up and down? (That is channelling Joni Mitchell, on life.)
When it comes to server farms that are called The Cloud to make them sound elevated, mysterious, and friendly (I infer), I leave it to the reader to decide how much is a dark side.
The latest breach affecting students has not yet been widely publicized because "they" are still investigating. It's important to tell persons who have had their identity compromised well after bad actors have had the opportunity to take advantage/sarc.
PowerSchool suffered a breach in December 2024 after an unauthorized user accessed their student information system, resulting in the possible exposure of Social Security numbers, medical data, full names, addresses, and more for up to 50 million students. To learn more about this breach, read PowerSchool’s official statement here.

If you subscribe to most identity theft protection businesses, the first thing they will tell you to do is go to Experian, Equifax, TransUnion and freeze your credit, and report that you have been a victim (if you have been a victim).
Why give the crooks a head start (Education pun)? Freeze your credit today. Wonder another day why we need outfits like Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion trading in our most private information without our consent and without informing us.
I would suggest that you do not allow any "app" to "save" your medical or tax data or banking info to a site that you do not control. You cannot control the IRS, your doctors' offices, your insurance companies etc, but control what you can, do not use Docusign or Authentisign.... or whatever they are called. Those apps are convenient, but they turn your legal signature into one of five versions of your typed name.
Some of those documents might be public record. Do you think that might be a boon to identity thieves?
Yes, I would say that the cloud has a dark side. It's like the old rule about writing about Magic. There is always a cost, always a downside.
All the best,
