The hardwork method is what I chose since it was first contact.M Paxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14096697282530998519noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26974492.post-13043264549641701962010-07-25T13:35:48.956-04:002010-07-25T13:35:48.956-04:00The best way to tame the adjective/adverb (modifie...The best way to tame the adjective/adverb (modifier in general) problem is to delete them all.

Then set the MS aside for a while.

Then re-read it and change the verbs or nouns that need modification to a direct one that says what you mean.

Then set it aside.

Then reread it and add the necessary modifiers.

After you do this exercise on a couple of your own long manuscripts, your mind will supply the correct word that does not need modification as you first draft.

That is, it will come to mind if you did your vocabulary building before you even aspired to writing fiction.

If not, build vocabulary by:

a) reading in your field
b) reading outside your field
c) reading the dictionary and any other reference on words you can find
d) do a "word-for-the-day" for a year
e) read fiction with a highlighter in hand and highlight well-used words - keep a list, make your own sentences up with them.

If you have an emotional reaction to a story someone else wrote, go back over it word-for-word and find the words you react to emotionally. Use those in sentences until they become part of your normal speaking vocabulary.

I've found the Thesaurus almost never helps me find a good word, but that may just be how my mind works. Try browsing a Thesaurus and making up sentences using alternative words.

Jacqueline Lichtenberg
http://jacquelinelichtenberg.comJacqueline Lichtenberghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01613040740264804278noreply@blogger.com
